This is the Best Job According to the Words of the Prophet Muhammad

The Prophet Muhammad SAW once mentioned the best job among mankind. This job is related to a person’s actions and one of them is easily found in society.

The hadith about the best job was narrated by Imam Ahmad, Ath-Thabrani, Al-Hakim, and Baihaqi as stated in the book Jami’ al-Hadits quoted by Muhammad M. Reysyahri et al in the book Encyclopedia Mizanul Hikmah: Collection of Selected Hadith of the Prophet SAW.

The Messenger of Allah SAW said,

خيرُ الكسبِ كسبُ يديْ العاملِ إذا نصحَ

Meaning: “The best work is the work of a person with his own hands, if he is sincere.”

In another editorial it is said,

A man’s work with his hands and every good sale and purchase.

According to the explanation in the book Sepenggal Cerita Sejuta Makna by Abdul Wahid Al-Faizin, in the hadith the Prophet Muhammad SAW mentioned two best jobs, namely work done with his own hands and trading. Work done with one’s own hands is the best job because it is guaranteed to be halal.

There are also those who interpret “work done with one’s own hands” as work that is done well or professionally. This work requires precision, responsibility, is far from elements of fraud, and is not careless.

It is mentioned in Tanbih al-Khawathir as quoted by Muhammad M. Reysyahri et al in the Mizanul Hikmah Encyclopedia, Allah SWT loves people who work and eat from the results of their own work. This relies on the words of the Prophet David AS when passing a shoemaker,

Meaning: “O So and so! Work and eat. Indeed, Allah loves those who work and eat (the results of his work) and does not love those who eat but do not work.”

Rasulullah SAW also said regarding this,

Meaning: “No one eats food that is better than the results of his own efforts. And indeed the Prophet of Allah, Daud AS, ate from his own efforts.” (This history is contained in Kanz al-Ummal)

This hadith is also contained in Riyadhus Shalihin, a collection of hadiths by Imam an-Nawawi. This hadith was issued by Imam Bukhari.

According to the explanation in Syarah Riyadhus Shalihin by Syaikh Salim bin ‘Ied Al-Hilali translated by M. Abdul Ghoffar, this hadith contains the meaning that the best food and the most peaceful life is what results from effort. This is what the prophets did and Allah SWT has explained that the emanation of their manhaj is not to ask for wages from other people.

In Sunan at-Tirmidzi there is also a hasan sahih hadith which states that the best food is the result of one’s own efforts. This hadith is narrated from Ahmad bin Mani, from Yahya bin Zakariya bin Abi Za’idah, from al-Ma’sy, from Umarah bin Umari, from her aunt, from Aisyah RA who said that the Messenger of Allah SAW said,

“Indeed, the best that you eat is the result of your work, and your children are among the results of your work.”
